Guangxi Travel Guide
Guilin, Yangshuo, Chongzuo and Detian—compared by river season, road time, activity level and the hotel realities beyond the main cities.
The region
Decide whether Guangxi fits the way you want to travel.
Guangxi works as two connected landscape chapters: the rivers, terraces and karst country around Guilin and Yangshuo, followed by the quieter borderlands around Chongzuo, Mingshi and Detian. The westbound road connection is what turns them into one journey.
Beihai and Weizhou Island are valuable coastal extensions, but they do not belong inside the standard seven-day journey. Keeping them separate protects both the river days and the borderland section from rushed transfers.

Planning guide
Season, pace and route length shape the experience.
Use these practical differences to decide whether the region belongs in this trip and how much time to protect for it.
Who this region suits
Guangxi suits first-time visitors who want dramatic scenery without high-altitude demands. Walking, cycling, rafting and terrace paths can all be adjusted. It is less suitable for travelers who require the same international hotel standard every night or want to add the coast without adding enough days.
Best time to visit
April to October is the broad window. Spring is green and often wetter, summer brings stronger waterfall volume with heat and humidity, and early autumn can be easier for outdoor pacing. Rice terraces change with planting and harvest, so the visual character of Longji should be matched to the travel month.
How many days to allow
Seven days can connect Guilin, Longji, Yangshuo, Chongzuo and Detian at a realistic pace. Beihai and Weizhou Island need at least three or four additional nights because the transfer south, ferry timing and weather create a separate coast chapter. Jingxi and Sanjiang also belong in a longer route.
Travel reality
Arrival points, road time and stays matter.
Getting in and out
Guilin is the natural arrival point, with rail and air connections and short early transfers. The longest core transfer is the private road day from Yangshuo toward Chongzuo, usually planned with comfort stops. Nanning is the logical departure city and avoids driving back to Guilin after Detian.
What to expect on the road
Guilin and Yangshuo have the strongest hotel choice. Longji and the borderland section have fewer premium options, so location, access and reliability matter more than a familiar brand name. Two nights around Mingshi or Chongzuo allow Detian to feel like part of the journey rather than a long same-day detour. In warmer months, early starts and midday recovery time can also improve the pace.
