Qinghai and Gansu are best understood as a road journey through changing scale: high plateau, salt lakes, grassland, Danxia ridges, frontier history and desert. Distance is not background information here; it determines which stops can receive proper time.
The complete loop needs ten days. Qarhan and Chaka Salt Lakes, Mogao Caves, Mingsha Mountain, and Zhangye Rainbow Danxia are fixed anchors; the rest of the route is arranged to keep those essential days from becoming rushed transfers.

Who this region suits
This region suits travelers who value landscape, photography and Silk Road history enough to accept several long road days. It is less suitable for anyone seeking uniformly short transfers, guaranteed five-star standards outside the main cities or a schedule that leaves no flexibility for weather and altitude.
Best time to visit
May to September is the broad planning window. Early summer is cooler, high summer brings greener Qilian scenery with greater demand, and September can offer sharper desert light with colder plateau nights. Exact access, flower seasons and lake appearance vary and should never be presented as guaranteed.
How many days to allow
Ten days is the useful minimum for a route that gives the salt lakes, Dunhuang and Zhangye protected time. A fourteen-day version can add more of the Qaidam Basin, Qilian or the Hexi Corridor without turning every day into a transfer. Shorter plans should finish in Dunhuang instead of pretending to complete the full loop.

Getting in and out
Xining is the practical arrival city and provides time to rest before higher roads. Dunhuang can be an efficient departure point for a focused one-way journey; a true loop requires the return through Zhangye and Qilian. Mogao Caves timing and other key reservations should be secured before the road sequence is finalised.
What to expect on the road
Several driving days may take four to six hours before scenic stops. Xining, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang offer the strongest accommodation, while remote nights can be simpler. Room heating or cooling, access and the exact property should be made clear before confirmation, alongside a light start for altitude adjustment.
