About CN Expedition

CN Expedition designs private trips to Yunnan, Guangxi and Qinghai–Gansu in China for independent travelers, and supports them by WhatsApp while they travel.

Who plans your trip

Bo Lan, Founder and trip designer

I started CN Expedition because these places show a side of China that most visitors never see. Yunnan's mountain towns and Guangxi's karst valleys are less famous than Beijing or Shanghai, but they are some of the most beautiful places in the country. Few foreign travelers reach them, partly because they are hard to plan on your own.

I plan every trip myself, from the first email to the day you fly home.

Why we exist

China has become much easier to visit: more visa-free entry, foreign cards in Alipay and WeChat Pay, and high-speed trains almost everywhere. What is still hard is knowing which places belong together, how long the roads really take, and what to do when an app fails in a town where nobody speaks English.

That is the gap we fill. We focus on three regions we know from our own travels, Yunnan, Guangxi and Qinghai–Gansu, and design trips there for independent travelers who want them done properly.

How we check what we tell you

Rules for China's scenic areas change often: booking windows, real-name tickets, seasonal hours, closures after storms or rockfalls. A plan built on last year's blog post fails at the gate.

  • We keep our own record of the more than 50 attractions and mountain roads on our routes: where and when tickets go on sale, prices, opening hours, seasonal closures and whether a foreign passport can book. Each fact carries its source and the date we last checked it.
  • Every week we check each one for new notices and re-verify a rotating share of the details against official sources: the scenic area's own announcements, local government and official news.
  • In the two weeks before you travel and while you are on the road, we watch official weather warnings, road notices and scenic-area announcements along your route.
  • When we cannot confirm something from an official source, your plan says so, rather than guessing.

One example: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's cable car tickets go on sale only 7 days ahead and sell out on busy days, so "book as early as you can" is not advice anyone can follow. Your plan names the day sales open and what to do if they sell out.

How we work

We answer while you travel

During your trip, our WhatsApp reply windows are set to China mornings and evenings, when travelers actually need help.

We have traveled these roads

Our routes come from our own travels in Yunnan, Guangxi and Qinghai–Gansu, including the drive from Shangri-La to Meili Snow Mountain in March 2026.

We tell you what does not work

Seven days cannot cover Guilin, Detian and Weizhou Island. Shangri-La sits at about 3,300 metres. We put the limits in writing before you pay for anything.

Who does what

  1. Your planner

CN Expedition, a company registered in Shanghai, China

Designs the route, writes every brief and stays your one point of contact, from the first email to the day you fly home.

  2. Licensed travel agency

Our inbound agency partner in China

Books and contracts hotels, private cars and guides under its travel licence, with one quote and one invoice for everything booked in China.

  3. Drivers and local guides

    Arranged through the agency

Briefed by us in Chinese on your exact route, timings, stops and preferences before you meet them.

What we do not do

Hotels, cars and guides booked through the partner team are contracted and invoiced by our licensed inbound travel agency partner in China. CN Expedition designs and coordinates the trip. When you want hotels, drivers and guides booked and paid in one place, we work with a licensed inbound travel agency in China that contracts with you directly.
