The short version. Most China trips are planned in the order that works for Europe, where you can book as you go. In China the bottlenecks are fixed: a visa-free transit area that does not cover every route, real-name tickets released on set days, hotels licensed for foreign guests, and altitude that has to be climbed in sequence. Put those four in the right order and the rest of the trip is ordinary planning.
The order, week by week

The visa, matched to the route
US passport holders need a tourist visa for every route we run. The 240-hour visa-free transit exists, but its stay area stops at nine prefectures in Yunnan and twelve cities in Guangxi, and includes nothing in Qinghai or Gansu. Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain and the Detian waterfall are all outside it.
What it costs if missed. Found out at the airport or at a checkpoint, this costs you the Tibetan half of Yunnan or the Detian day, and a visa cannot be arranged in a few days.
Do this. File the online application at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal this week. Hand in your passport at the consulate for your state within 30 days of filing: walk-in, no appointment, about four working days of processing, $140 through the end of 2026. Do not file less than three weeks before departure.

Direction, trains, and hotels that can take you
The direction of the route decides the altitude. Yunnan should climb: Kunming or Dali, then Lijiang, then Shangri-La at about 3,300 m. Flying straight into Shangri-La for the first night is the most common thing we change in a plan. Qinghai–Gansu spends several nights near 3,000 m and needs the same patience.
What it costs if missed. A first night at 3,300 m costs most people the next two days.
Do this. Fix the order of cities now. Register on the 12306 train app with your passport (verification takes minutes to a day). Book hotels only where the listing says foreign guests are accepted: not every hotel in China is registered to host foreigners, and the problem shows up at check-in, late at night.

Money and phone, set up at home
China runs on Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both take foreign Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, but the setup includes a passport check and a face scan that is far easier at your kitchen table than in an arrivals hall.
What it costs if missed. Without them you cannot pay a driver, a ticket machine or many restaurants. Cash works, slowly.
Do this. Install Alipay, verify with your passport, link a card and tell your bank you are traveling. Buy a travel eSIM and install it before you fly, so Google, WhatsApp and Maps keep working. Fill in China's online arrival card before departure; since 20 November 2025 it replaces the paper card.

The ticket that sells out
The tickets that matter are released on a schedule, not on demand. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's Glacier Park cable car goes on sale at 20:00 Beijing time seven days before each date, real-name, through the Lijiang Tourism Group WeChat mini program, and in high season sells out within minutes. The Mogao Caves sell a limited number of real-name tickets a day; booking opens a few weeks ahead and summer dates go quickly.
What it costs if missed. No ticket, no cable car. The Jade Dragon day becomes a day at the gate.
Do this. Write the release moment in your calendar in your own time zone: 20:00 in Beijing is 8 am US Eastern in summer time, 7 am in winter. Set up the mini program with your passport beforehand, book the moment it opens, and keep a Plan B for the same morning.

Check what changed
Cable cars close for wind, mountain roads close for snow and landslides, and the notices are in Chinese. A plan that was right a month ago can be wrong on the day.
What it costs if missed. A closed road found at the gate costs a day; found three days earlier, it costs a phone call.
Do this. Re-check the official notice of every site you have booked; we re-verify the booking rules and status of the places on our routes every week, and the itinerary pages carry the current ones. Turn on the eSIM and open Alipay the moment you land; hotels register foreign guests with the police from your passport, which is routine.
Or have us settle the order
Essentials trip design, US$190 for up to 7 days, does all of the above for your dates: the visa area checked against the route, every ticket that sells out with the day it opens, two hotels per stop that take foreign guests, the altitude order fixed, a Plan B for each weather day. It is delivered within 5 business days of payment. If you would rather hand the whole trip over, our partner team in China books the approved plan under one quote. Either way, the route check is free: tell us your dates, and we tell you what will sell out first.

Questions people ask
Is six weeks enough to get a Chinese visa as an American?
Yes, if you file now. The online application is followed by a walk-in at your consulate and about four working days of processing (two to three with express service). Do not file less than three weeks before departure, and remember the passport has to be handed in within 30 days of the online filing.
Can I use the 240-hour visa-free transit for Yunnan instead of a visa?
Only if you stay inside the nine Yunnan prefectures in the transit area and arrive from one country and leave for a different country or region with a confirmed onward ticket. Shangri-La, Deqin and Meili Snow Mountain are outside the area, and so is Detian in Guangxi and all of Qinghai and Gansu. All three of our sample routes need a visa.
What sells out first on these routes?
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's Glacier Park cable car, released seven days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time, and the Mogao Caves' real-name daily allocation in summer. Both are bookable by foreigners; both need your passport details entered before the release moment.
Can you plan a trip that leaves in three weeks?
Usually. Essentials is delivered within 5 business days of payment, and the visa is the only item that cannot be rushed, so it has to be filed already or filed this week. Tell us your dates on the route check and we will say plainly what is realistic.
