Qinghai–Gansu itinerary: a 10-day loop from Xining
Qinghai–Gansu is a road trip, and it needs 10 days: start in Xining, cross the plateau past Qinghai Lake to the Chaka and Qarhan salt lakes, drop into the desert at Dunhuang for the Mogao Caves, then return along the Hexi Corridor through Zhangye and Qilian. Expect several 4 to 6 hour driving days and nights between 2,300 and 3,100 metres. Go between May and September.
Elevation of the main stops, on the same 0–4,000 m scale we use for all three regions. The dashed line marks 3,000 metres, where we keep the first evening light.

Day by day
As you read, the map draws the route to where each day ends. The bar shows that night's elevation on the same 0–4,000 m scale; the tick marks 3,000 metres.
- Day 1
Arrive in Xining
Xining sits at about 2,300 metres, so the first day is for rest and water. If you feel well, walk to Dongguan Mosque in the late afternoon; visitors are not admitted during prayers, and the main prayer hall is for worshippers.
- Day 2
Qinghai Lake to Chaka
Cross Riyue Pass to Qinghai Lake, China's largest lake, then continue to Chaka for the night. A Chaka ticket allows re-entry within 48 hours, so you can see the salt lake in the evening light and again the next morning.

- Day 3
Chaka Salt Lake to Delingha
Be at the Chaka gate when it opens, before the wind rises and the coaches arrive, when the reflections are best. Continue west across the plateau to Delingha.

- Day 4
Across the Qaidam Basin to Golmud
A long, empty plateau drive with private stops. Golmud is a working city, but it is the base for Qarhan.
- Day 5
Qarhan Salt Lake
Spend the day at Qarhan, where mineral pools turn emerald and turquoise against white salt flats. It is a working salt field, and some areas close without notice, so we confirm access close to the date.

- Day 6
Golmud to Dunhuang
Cross the Dangjin Pass at 3,648 metres and drop about 2,500 metres into the desert at Dunhuang. The evening is free.
- Day 7
Mogao Caves
Spend the morning at the Mogao Caves, a thousand years of Buddhist murals and sculpture. Daily tickets are limited and released only a few weeks ahead; we book the moment your date opens. Rest in the afternoon.
- Day 8
Mingsha dunes and Crescent Lake
Go to Mingsha Mountain late in the afternoon for softer light and cooler sand. Camel rides and dune walks are optional.

- Day 9
Jiayuguan to Zhangye
Drive the Hexi Corridor, stopping at Jiayuguan, the western fortress of the Ming Great Wall. Reach Zhangye for the Rainbow Danxia hills in the late afternoon; closing times change with the season, so we time the visit to that day's last shuttle.

- Day 10
Qilian Mountains to Xining
Return south through the Qilian Mountains, past summer grassland and Zhuoer Mountain, to Xining for your flight. Until at least mid-2027 the old G227 road over Biandukou and the Dabanshan is closed for rebuilding, so the drive runs through Sunan County to Qilian and on to Xining by the expressway. If that makes the day too long for your dates, the plan returns from Zhangye to Xining by high-speed train and keeps Qilian for a longer trip. To shorten the trip, end in Dunhuang on day 8 instead.

Is this route right for you?
It suits you if
- The landscape is the point and you enjoy long drives.
- You want Silk Road history and Buddhist art as well as scenery.
- You accept simpler hotels on two or three nights between cities.
Choose something else if
- You need short transfers or five-star hotels every night.
- You cannot spend nights near 3,000 metres.
When to go
- May and June
- Cool and clear. Grasslands are still turning green.
- July and August
- Green Qilian grasslands, rapeseed flowers around Qinghai Lake, and the most visitors.
- September
- Sharp desert light and fewer people; cold nights on the plateau.
Where to stay
- Xining
- A comfortable city hotel for the first two acclimatization nights and the last.
- Chaka, Delingha and Golmud
- The best available, which is often simple. Heating and hot water matter more than style.
- Dunhuang
- The strongest hotels of the trip, including desert-edge resorts near the dunes.
- Zhangye
- A good city hotel close to the Danxia park entrance.
The 14-day version
With two weeks, slow the loop down: add the wind-carved yardangs of Dunhuang's Yadan National Geopark, a day at Mati Temple's cliff caves near Zhangye, and two nights in the Qilian grasslands instead of driving straight through. The two Qilian days use the Sunan road and the expressway while the G227 is closed for rebuilding, through 2027.
- Day 11: Mati Temple and the Zhangye countryside
- Day 12: Qilian grasslands and Zhuoer Mountain
- Day 13: Qilian to Xining at an easy pace
- Day 14: Fly home from Xining

Qinghai–Gansu itinerary questions
Do Americans need a visa for Qinghai and Gansu?
Yes, with no exception: neither province is in the 240-hour visa-free transit area, and the US is not on the 30-day visa-free list. Apply for a tourist (L) visa about six weeks before you travel; our visa guide has the steps.
How many days do you need for Qinghai and Gansu?
Ten days for the full loop from Xining through the salt lakes, Dunhuang and Zhangye. With 7 or 8 days, fly out of Dunhuang instead of returning to Xining.
How high does the Qinghai–Gansu route go?
You sleep between about 2,300 and 3,100 metres for the first five nights, and the road crosses passes above 3,500 metres. Dunhuang and Zhangye, in Gansu, are much lower.
Do I need to book the Mogao Caves in advance?
Yes. Tickets are sold by real name, limited each day and sell out quickly in summer. Booking opens only a few weeks before each date, so we book the moment your date opens and build the Dunhuang days around the time slot.
What are hotels like outside the cities?
Xining, Dunhuang and Zhangye have good hotels. In Chaka, Delingha and Golmud, expect simpler rooms; we check heating, hot water and location before recommending anything.
Is Qarhan or Chaka Salt Lake better?
They are different. Chaka is a mirror-like lake best at dawn; Qarhan is a vast working salt field with vivid mineral pools. This route includes both.
