Northwest China

Qinghai–Gansu: what to see, by interest

Qinghai–Gansu is a road loop, not a set of towns. The Qinghai half is high plateau: Qinghai Lake, China's largest inland salt lake; Chaka Salt Lake at an average of 3,059 m; the Riyue Pass at 3,520 m on the road west from Xining. The Gansu half is desert and oasis along the old Silk Road, with the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang as the one site that must be booked ahead, by real name, through the Dunhuang Academy's own channel.

Unlike Yunnan or Guangxi, the order of the days here is set by elevation and by which roads are open. In 2026 and 2027 the G227 road between Zhangye, Qilian and Xining is closed in three sections for rebuilding, and the plateau passes get snow outside summer. The last group on this page is the planning note that explains both. Dunhuang had more than 5.26 million visitors in 2025, so the Gansu sites are busy in July, August and the first week of October.

Plateau lakes

Salt lakes and one very large highland lake, all between Xining and Da Qaidam on the Qinghai side. For travelers who came for landscape and photographs and accept nights near 3,000 m. Every one of them depends on calm, clear weather.

Qinghai Lake at Erlangjian 青海湖 二郎剑景区

Gonghe County, on the Xining–Chaka road

The main ticketed shore area of China's largest inland salt lake, beside the G109 on the south shore. Other open areas are Xiannü Bay and Shengquan Bay, plus a dozen roadside viewing points around the lake; Heimahe is the usual sunrise stop.1 2 3

When
Rapeseed flowers around the lake in July. In winter the lake freezes and Erlangjian runs blue-ice viewing.
Time
A stop of 1.5 to 3 hours on the drive from Xining to Chaka.
Booking
Tickets are sold online; a ticket is valid 72 hours from first entry, and face recognition is recorded at the gate.
What can go wrong
Wind and cloud flatten the colour, and summer storms close scenic areas nearby. Nearly 3 million visitors a year, so July, August and the first week of October are crowded. Plan B is a free roadside viewpoint.

Chaka Salt Lake 天空之镜茶卡盐湖景区

Chaka Town, Wulan County

A shallow salt lake where a thin layer of brine over white salt reflects the sky. Visitors walk out or take a small train along the old salt railway. Average elevation 3,059 m.4 5 6 7

When
A calm morning after opening or late afternoon. Peak season runs 1 May to 31 October; in winter only part of the area opens and the train, boats and shops stop.
Time
A night in Chaka, for an evening visit and a morning visit on the same ticket.
Booking
Not compulsory in peak season: official WeChat or Douyin account, Ctrip, Meituan or the ticket office. Real-name; bring the passport. Peak-season entrance 60 CNY, valid 48 hours with re-entry; small train 50 CNY one way. Winter entry was free, by reservation, in 2025–26.
What can go wrong
The gate opens at 08:00, so a true dawn visit is not on the published schedule. Storms close it. Chaka Sky No.1 is a separate site, closed since July 2026, and not this one.

Qarhan Salt Lake 察尔汗盐湖

About 60 km from Golmud

Visitor zones set inside a working salt and potash field: green mineral pools, a salt-surfaced road, platforms and a salt museum.8 9 10

When
Clear, calm days. The season opened in mid-March in 2025, so expect a winter break.
Time
Half a day from Golmud.
Booking
Online, real-name; the internal shuttle is in practice compulsory.
What can go wrong
Arrangements change at short notice: the drop-off point moved on a day's notice in July 2025. The undeveloped salt crust is off limits.

Emerald Lake 大柴旦翡翠湖

Da Qaidam, about 20 minutes from town

A group of green brine pools in a former salt-mining area, walked on boardwalks. The Haixi tourism bureau lists it first among the Da Qaidam area's core sights.11 12 13 14

When
Morning, and the sightseeing bus to the far end, away from the entrance crowd.
Time
Two to three hours.
Booking
The gate has been reported to accept only an ID-card swipe; how a passport enters is settled before travel.
What can go wrong
Earthquakes: after the M6.3 quake of 16 June 2026 every scenic spot in the area closed for ten days; after an M5.6 on 19 August it stayed open. Stay on the boardwalk; the mud at the pool edges is soft.

Silk Road caves and grottoes

Painted Buddhist caves cut into cliffs from the 4th century onward. Mogao is the main one and must be booked; the others are quieter, cheaper and need no lead time, which makes them the Plan B when Mogao is sold out or closed by weather. For travelers interested in art and history.

Mogao Caves 莫高窟

Dunhuang

The largest group of Buddhist painted caves on the Silk Road, run by the Dunhuang Academy. A visit starts with two films at the digital centre in town, then a shuttle and a guided walk through a set number of caves.15 16 17 18 19

When
The first morning slot in April to May or September to November. July, August and Chinese holidays are the hardest for tickets.
Time
Half a day from Dunhuang.
Booking
Compulsory, real-name, through the Academy's own WeChat booking service, which has an English entry for foreign passports; the Academy authorises no third-party sellers. Daily cap 6,000 regular visits, with 12,000 emergency visits added in peak season when needed. Regular ticket in peak season (1 April to 30 November), 8 caves with films and shuttle: 238 CNY; foreign-language visit 258 CNY; off season (1 December to 31 March), 10 caves: 140 CNY. Guides report regular tickets opening 30 days ahead.
What can go wrong
Regular tickets sell out within minutes in summer. Caves close in heavy rain or sandstorms, and visits are suspended when humidity passes 62 percent. No photography inside. Plan B is the Western Thousand Buddha Caves the same day, or Yulin as a day trip.

Western Thousand Buddha Caves 西千佛洞

West of Dunhuang

A small group of painted caves in a river gorge, managed by the Dunhuang Academy. Much smaller than Mogao: a fallback, not an equal.20

When
Open all year; peak-season hours 08:30 to 17:30.
Time
1 to 1.5 hours, as a stop on the road to Yangguan.
Booking
Not required; 30 CNY at the ticket office or through the Academy's ticketing account.
What can go wrong
Bags and cameras are left at the ticket office. Caves close in rain, snow or sandstorms, with refunds.

Yulin Caves 榆林窟

Guazhou County, about 180 km east of Dunhuang

A cliff-cave site in a river canyon, often called Mogao's sister site, also run by the Dunhuang Academy, which publishes a foreign-visitor price that includes a foreign-language guide.21

When
Open all year; peak season 1 May to 31 October, 09:00 to 17:30.
Time
A full day from Dunhuang, about 2.5 hours each way, or a stop between Dunhuang and Jiayuguan.
Booking
Not required. Foreign visitor, regular caves with the foreign-language guide: 55 CNY. Special caves are sold only on site.
What can go wrong
Remote; wind, rain, snow or sandstorms close it. No photography.

Mati Temple grottoes 马蹄寺

Sunan County, about 60 km from Zhangye

Cave-temple groups cut into sandstone cliffs at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, about 1,600 years old and a national key heritage site. The best-known part is a seven-level cave temple climbed through tunnels in the rock.22 23 71

When
Daylight; summer hours 08:00 to 18:00.
Time
Half a day from Zhangye. On our 14-day route.
Booking
Not required for the main area; the separate Jinta Temple is reported to need booking about three days ahead.
What can go wrong
The tunnel climb is steep and narrow, not for limited mobility or a fear of heights. The booking sites sell two tickets, both with the round-trip shuttle: 52 CNY for the main area, or 87 CNY with the North Temple grottoes; there is no official 2026 price notice. In 2025 staff were charging an unauthorised fee on the road to Jinta Temple; we phone before a visit.

Bingling Temple grottoes 炳灵寺石窟

Yongjing County, near Lanzhou

A World Heritage cave site on the Yellow River reservoir above the Liujiaxia dam, begun more than 1,600 years ago, with 216 caves and over 800 statues, reached by boat from the dam or the county-town pier.24

When
Full price from 1 April; the winter off season halves the price and closes some parts.
Time
A full day from Lanzhou. It does not fit the Xining loop; it belongs to a trip that starts or ends in Lanzhou.
What can go wrong
Reservoir level and wind decide whether the boats run.

Desert and yadan

Dunes, wind-carved rock and the ruined Han-dynasty frontier west of Dunhuang, plus one flooded yadan field on the Qinghai side. For travelers who like empty country and do not mind long drives with no shade. Late afternoon is the time for all of them.

Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake 鸣沙山月牙泉

Edge of Dunhuang

High dunes at the edge of the city with a small crescent-shaped spring-fed lake at their foot. Visitors climb the dunes on foot or ride camels.25 26

When
Enter around 17:00 for the climb and the sunset; midday in summer is above 35 degrees.
Time
Three hours.
Booking
Compulsory for full-price tickets: online only, real-name, by date and time slot, entry by ID and face recognition. Entrance 110 CNY. Tickets from unofficial sellers may be refused, per the Dunhuang police and tourism bureau.
What can go wrong
Camel queues of up to two hours in holidays; dust storms in spring and thunderstorms in summer stop dune activities. Plan B is a sunrise entry the next morning.

Yumenguan, the Jade Gate Pass, and the Han Great Wall 玉门关遗址景区

About 90 km north-west of Dunhuang

The ruins of the Han-dynasty frontier: the square mud fort of the pass itself, a stretch of Han wall built of reeds and gravel, and the Hecang granary ruin, linked by a shuttle of about 34 km round trip.27 28

When
Morning or late afternoon; the area advises against the heat of 14:00 to 16:00, and April has dusty days.
Time
Half a day, usually combined with the Yadan park further on.
Booking
Real-name, online or at the window. Entrance 40 CNY; shuttle 50 CNY.
What can go wrong
Wind and dust. Visitors stay at least 5 m from the wall. Plan B is Yangguan, which has a museum indoors.

Yangguan, the Sun Pass 阳关景区

South-west of Dunhuang

The southern of the two Han passes west of Dunhuang, near today's Nanhu village; its earth walls have survived almost 2,000 years in the dry climate.28 29

When
Open all year; 08:00 to 19:30 from April to October.
Time
Two hours, on a western day with the Western Thousand Buddha Caves.
Booking
Entrance 50 CNY; sightseeing cart 10 CNY (2023 figures).

Dunhuang Yadan National Geopark 敦煌雅丹国家地质公园

158 km from Dunhuang

A field of wind-eroded ridges in the Gobi, visited on the park's own buses along a set route with stops.30 31

When
Late afternoon on the sunset departure. Peak season hours 06:30 to 19:30; they change by notice in mid-October.
Time
A full afternoon and evening: about 2.5 hours each way, with no fuel on the Gobi section. On our 14-day route.
Booking
Book ahead, real-name, through the park's official account. Entrance with bus 120 CNY in peak season, 95 CNY off season.
What can go wrong
Heat, no shade; wind and sand can stop the buses. Plan B is Yumenguan on the same road.

Water Yadan 乌素特水上雅丹

Qaidam Basin, Qinghai

Yadan ridges standing in a lake beside the G315 road. It is in Qinghai, a different place from the Dunhuang park, and a full day's detour.32 13 14

When
Calm, clear days; June to September is the busy season.
Time
3 to 3.5 hours from Da Qaidam, and about 4.5 hours on to Golmud. On our 14-day route.
What can go wrong
Closed for ten days after the June 2026 earthquake and open since; few services on the road. Plan B is Emerald Lake.

Coloured hills and grasslands

Striped sandstone around Zhangye and green summer pasture under the Qilian range. This is the group most affected by the G227 closure of 2026–27: read the road note below before counting on Qilian or Menyuan.

Zhangye Rainbow Danxia 张掖七彩丹霞景区

Linze County, about 40 km from Zhangye

Low ridges banded red, orange and yellow, seen from boardwalk platforms linked by the park's own buses.33 34 35 72 73

When
Late afternoon to sunset; the colours are stronger after rain and in low sun.
Time
2.5 to 3 hours from Zhangye.
Booking
Buy online ahead; private cars stay outside, and the park bus is the only way to the viewing platforms. Published prices conflict, from 72 CNY (China Daily, April 2026) to 93 CNY with the bus, and there is no official 2026 price notice; we confirm before quoting.
What can go wrong
Closing time against sunset in autumn: the published autumn hours end at 18:00. Leaving the boardwalk is fined at least 2,000 CNY. Plan B is Pingshanhu Grand Canyon.

Pingshanhu Grand Canyon 平山湖大峡谷

56 km north of Zhangye

A red sandstone canyon with walking routes, open summer 07:30 to 18:00.33

Time
Half a day from Zhangye.
Booking
Entrance 100 CNY, shuttle 30 CNY (2024 figures).

Zhuoer Mountain and the Qilian grassland 卓尔山

Qilian County, Qinghai

A red sandstone hill above Qilian town with a boardwalk to a beacon-tower viewpoint, 2,930 m at the summit, looking across summer pasture and forest to snow peaks.36 37 38 39

When
July and August; the summit is windy even then.
Time
Two to three hours, with a night in Qilian.
What can go wrong
Reaching Qilian at all is the question in 2026–27: see the road note. The official route from Zhangye is the G213 through Sunan County, and from Qilian to Xining the S302 and the G0611 expressway. If the detour makes the day too long, the plan drops Qilian and returns from Zhangye to Xining by high-speed train.

Menyuan rapeseed fields 门源油菜花

Menyuan County, Qinghai, about two hours from Xining

A belt of rapeseed fields more than 100 km long on the north side of the Qilian range, yellow in midsummer; the fields are free, and viewing platforms charge.40 41 42 43

When
Full bloom in July, best in the first half; in 2026 the fields were in bloom on 17 and 18 July. Avoid the day the Tour of Qinghai Lake cycle race passes, when roads close for hours.
Time
A day trip from Xining, by car or the high-speed train, or a stop between Qilian and Xining.
What can go wrong
The old road over the Dabanshan is closed until mid-2027, so the Dabanshan viewpoint is out; Menyuan is reached by the expressway. Plan B is the rapeseed around Qinghai Lake.

Faith and frontier

Tibetan Buddhist and Hui Muslim places of worship in and near Xining, the Ming fortress at the western end of the Great Wall, and the museums that explain them. This group needs the least driving and suits the acclimatisation days in Xining and the long corridor day through Jiayuguan and Zhangye.

Kumbum Monastery 塔尔寺

Huangzhong District, 25 km from Xining

A large working Tibetan Buddhist monastery, rated 5A, which China Daily describes as the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in north-west China. Known for butter sculpture, displayed on the 15th day of the first lunar month.44 45 46 47 74 75

When
June to August per China Daily; festival days bring large crowds.
Time
Half a day, on the second acclimatisation day.
Booking
Off-season entrance 40 CNY from 5 March 2026. Peak season: about 70 CNY on the booking sites, the price set in 2018; China Daily gives 80 CNY, the price before that cut. There is no official 2026 peak-season notice, so we confirm it. Tickets are checked at the halls, not for walking the outside.
What can go wrong
In 2025 the monastery's car park and two roads beside it were closed for works, with a shuttle from a lot on Jinxiu Road; we check whether that still applies. No photography inside the halls.

Dongguan Mosque 东关清真大寺

Xining

The city's main mosque in the Hui quarter east of the centre. Non-Muslim visitors see the courtyard and view the prayer hall from outside.48

When
A weekday morning or mid-afternoon outside prayer times; not Friday midday or Eid.
Time
45 minutes.
Booking
Free.
What can go wrong
Closed to visitors during prayers; shoulders and knees covered, women cover their hair.

Qinghai Provincial Museum 青海省博物馆

Xining

The provincial museum, known for prehistoric painted pottery, with a Qinghai history exhibition and galleries on archaeology, intangible heritage and revolutionary relics.49 50

When
Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30; closed Mondays except national holidays. A good first afternoon while acclimatising.
Time
1.5 to 2 hours.
Booking
Free, by advance real-name booking through the museum's official WeChat account, up to three days ahead; the museum authorises no third-party ticket sales.
What can go wrong
The Monday closure. No tripods or flash.

Tibetan Medicine and Culture Museum 青海藏医药文化博物馆

Xining

A two-wing museum: nine zones on the history of Tibetan medicine, medical thangka and herb samples in the north wing, Tibetan civilisation, painting and architecture in the south.51

Time
Two hours.
What can go wrong
Hours and admission are from a 2021 page; we confirm before listing it in a plan.

Jiayuguan Pass, the Overhanging Great Wall and the First Beacon Tower 嘉峪关关城 悬壁长城 长城第一墩

Jiayuguan

Three separate sites of the Ming Great Wall's western end: the fortress, a stretch of wall climbing a bare ridge, and the last beacon tower above the Taolai River gorge. Each has its own gate, ticket and hours.52 53

When
Late afternoon in summer. Fortress 08:00 to 18:30 from May to October and 09:00 to 18:00 in winter; the other two sites to 20:00 in summer.
Time
Two hours for the fortress alone; half a day for all three. On our 10-day route the fortress is a stop on a six-hour driving day, so the other two need a night in Jiayuguan.
Booking
Not required. Peak-season prices from the notice of April 2025: fortress 110 CNY; Overhanging Great Wall 21 CNY; First Beacon Tower 21 CNY, each listed separately. The 2024 entry guide said a fortress ticket came with free entry to the other two; the 2025 notice does not say, so we confirm which applies.
What can go wrong
Wind and sun on the walls.

Giant Buddha Temple 张掖大佛寺

Zhangye city centre

A temple founded in the Western Xia period whose main hall holds what the city calls the largest indoor wood-core clay reclining Buddha in Asia, with a Ming pagoda, a Qing guild hall and the district museum.54 33

When
Any time; a morning after a Danxia sunset.
Time
1 to 1.5 hours.
Booking
40 CNY (2024).

Dunhuang Museum 敦煌博物馆

Central Dunhuang

The city museum, and the indoor Plan B for a day when Mogao is closed by weather. Not the Dunhuang Academy's art museum, which closed for renovation in September 2026.55 56

When
Not Mondays.
Time
1 to 1.5 hours.
Booking
Free, per a 2023 government guide.

Food and markets

Three towns on the loop have a food street worth an evening: Xining, Dunhuang and Zhangye. The cooking is north-western and largely halal: mutton, hand-made wheat noodles, yogurt. These are daily markets, not weekly ones.

Mojia Street night market 莫家街夜市

Xining

A food street in the centre that reopened as a night market in July 2025 with more than 100 stalls: Qinghai roast lamb, hand-held mutton simmered in plain salted water, lamb-intestine noodles, niangpi cold noodles dressed with chilli and vinegar, fried cold jelly, skewers, and the thick set local yogurt.57 58

When
17:30 to midnight, all year.
Time
An evening. At 2,300 m on the first night, keep it light.

Dunhuang night market 敦煌夜市 沙洲夜市

Yangguan Zhonglu, Dunhuang

The city's night market since 1991, with more than 700 merchants and about 3 million visitors a year, named a national tourism and leisure block in 2025. Apricot-peel water, hu-style lamb stew with flatbread, beef pancakes with a local wild herb, donkey-meat yellow noodles.59 60 56

When
19:00 to midnight in the winter season.
Time
An evening.

Ganzhou Market and Ganzhou Alley 甘州市场 甘州巷子

Central Zhangye

A market where the local snacks are sold, with a newer snack street beside it: cuoyuzi, short hand-rolled noodles of wheat or buckwheat; chaopao, rolled noodle lengths boiled then fried with vegetables and braised meat; beef noodles for breakfast.61

Time
A lunch or an evening.

Altitude and roads: the note that sets the order

Not a list of sights. Order on this loop is decided by where you sleep and by which roads are open, and both are checked again the week before you fly.

Where the height is 海拔

The published figures: Riyue Pass 3,520 m; Qinghai Lake shore about 3,196 m; Chaka 3,059 m average; Delingha about 3,100 m area average; the Dangjin Pass between Qinghai and Dunhuang 3,648 m; Zhuoer Mountain summit 2,930 m; Menyuan about 3,000 m. Dunhuang, Jiayuguan and Zhangye are low. The plan climbs from Xining and sleeps at Chaka before anything higher.62 2 6 63 64 36 42

The G227 closure, 2026 to 2027 G227 扁都口—俄堡—景阳岭—达坂山

The road between Zhangye, Qilian and Xining is closed for rebuilding in three sections: Biandukou to Ebao from 23 May 2026 to 30 September 2027; Ebao to Jingyangling from 20 May 2026 to 31 July 2027; the Dabanshan climb from 1 May 2026 to 31 July 2027. Small vehicles use the G213 through Sunan County to Qilian, and the S302 and G0611 expressway from Qilian to Xining. The Biandukou drive and the Dabanshan viewpoint are out until at least mid-2027.38 39 43 65

Snow, sand and the passes 季节性管制

Snow and ice controls are documented on this loop in February, late March and early May; in March 2025 Gansu police stopped all traffic entering the Dangjin Pass expressway for ice. Summer brings storm closures of scenic areas and one-day race closures in July. Sandstorms and wind close Hexi Corridor expressway entrances in spring. The route is reliable from May to September; from October onward it is sold with a spare day and a daily road check.66 67 68 69

Not offered right now

Places a plan from us will not include until the notice changes.

  • East Taijinar Lake 东台吉乃尔湖: On 24 April 2025 the Golmud tourism bureau said the lake was nearly dry and no longer looked as it had, and advised visitors not to go. No later notice has been found. It is a mining area, not a scenic area.70
  • Bird Island and Sand Island, Qinghai Lake 鸟岛 沙岛: All tourism at Sand Island stopped in 2017 under the central environmental inspection, and Bird Island was suspended at the same time; no reopening notice has been found.1
  • Chaka Sky No.1 茶卡壹号·盐湖景区: A separate site from Chaka Salt Lake, closed since 21 July 2026 after a gyroplane crash, with no reopening date found.7
  • Biandukou and the Dabanshan on the G227 扁都口 达坂山: Closed to through traffic by the rebuilding notices above, until mid-2027 at the earliest.38 43
