Southwest China

Yunnan: what to see, by interest

Yunnan is the region where a trip climbs through several cultures in a week: from about 1,900 m at Kunming to about 3,300 m at Shangri-La, past the Bai courtyard towns by Erhai Lake, the Naxi old towns of Lijiang and a Tibetan monastery town on the plateau. It is the only one of our three regions with cable cars onto snow mountains, and it has a food calendar of its own, with wild mushrooms from May until the rains end in October.

This page is for choosing, not for ordering. Read the groups, tell us which two or three draw you most, and we will put them in the order the altitude and the ticket windows require. The south and west of the province, the Yuanyang terraces and Tengchong, are separate journeys from the northwest route, and the last two groups say why.

Snow mountains and glaciers

Four places where you see permanent snow without climbing: two by cable car, two from roadside viewpoints. They suit anyone comfortable at altitude, and all of them depend on a clear morning.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain 玉龙雪山

Lijiang

A snow mountain north of Lijiang with a cable car to the Glacier Park and a boardwalk above it, a lower cable car to Spruce Meadow, and Blue Moon Valley at the foot. The main peak is 5,596 m and is not climbed; the upper cable car station is at 4,506 m.1 2

When
A morning slot, any season. February to April is the windy season with afternoon gusts.
Time
A full day from Lijiang.
Booking
Entrance (100 CNY) and the eco-bus are booked by real name on the scenic area's WeChat mini program, up to 7 days ahead; cable cars are sold separately on the Lijiang Tourism Group mini program, also real-name and up to 7 days ahead. The Glacier Park cable car is capped at 10,000 tickets a day.
What can go wrong
Cloud hides the peak and wind stops the cable car; both cable cars sold out on 2 and 3 October 2026. Plan B is Spruce Meadow, which needs its own ticket. The Yak Meadow cable car is closed for rebuilding until about 2028.

Meili Snow Mountain from Feilai Temple and Wunongding 梅里雪山 飞来寺 / 雾浓顶观景台

Deqin

Roadside viewing platforms facing Kawagarbo, the main peak of Meili Snow Mountain. Feilai Temple is beside the Yunnan–Tibet road about 10 km from Deqin town, with a cluster of guesthouses around it; Wunongding is a platform on the old G214 road.3

When
Sunrise. October to December is the dry season with the fewest clouds, and it is cold; in summer the peak is often hidden.
Time
Overnight at Feilai Temple, arriving the afternoon before. It is a long drive from Shangri-La.
Booking
The platforms are sold as tickets with the Dukezong–Meili shuttle on booking sites; we confirm the current arrangement in the plan.
What can go wrong
The sunlit peak does not show every morning. Plan B is a second morning, which is why the plan gives Deqin two nights.

Baima Snow Mountain pass 白马雪山垭口

Between Shangri-La and Deqin

The high pass on the old road to Deqin. Since the tunnels opened in October 2016, normal traffic no longer crosses it; seeing the pass means choosing the old switchback road, whose condition changes with the season.4 5

When
Daylight on a clear day, spring to autumn.
Time
Part of the Shangri-La to Deqin drive.
What can go wrong
Snow and ice in winter, rockfall from June to August on the river section near Deqin. Plan B is the tunnel route.

Cangshan by the Ximatan cable car 苍山 洗马潭大索道

Dali

The highest of Cangshan's three cable cars, climbing to about 3,900 m above Dali. The other two reach only the mid-slope Jade Belt Road, which is in the walks group below.6

When
Morning. September to November is clearest; May and June for rhododendrons.
Time
Half a day from Dali.
Booking
Tickets at each station or online; the three cable cars have different operators and the tickets are not interchangeable.
What can go wrong
Fog, wind and frost stop the cable car, and the upper section can close in the early afternoon for wind. Plan B is the Gantong cable car and the Jade Belt Road.

Old towns and the Tea Horse Road

Eight towns and villages along the old trade road between Dali and Lijiang, from large and busy to small and quiet. For travelers who like lanes, architecture and daily life more than ticketed sights.

Dali Ancient City 大理古城

Dali

The walled old city of Dali, a living town rather than a museum, with Cangshan behind it and Erhai Lake in front.7

When
Early morning for quiet streets, evening for the lights. Summer and holidays are the peak.
Time
Half a day, from a base in Dali.
Booking
None; the streets are free.
What can go wrong
Crowds: more than 22 million visits between January and July 2026.

Xizhou 喜洲古镇

Dali, 18 km north of the old city

A Bai town of Ming and Qing courtyard houses on China's first list of Traditional Villages. Sifang Street is the centre, where Xizhou baba flatbread is baked; the Yan Family Courtyard shows the classic Bai layouts.8 9 42 43 44

When
Early morning, before the day-trip crowds. The rice fields beside the town are gold in late October and green from July to September.
Time
Half a day from Dali.
Booking
The town is free. The Yan Family Courtyard is about 25 CNY at the gate and a few yuan less on the booking sites; there is no official price notice.
What can go wrong
Busy since a popular TV series was filmed here: 3.24 million visits by the end of October 2025.

Shaxi and Sideng Street 沙溪古镇 寺登街

Jianchuan County, between Dali and Lijiang

A market town on the Tea Horse Road. Sideng Street, with its square, old gate, opera stage and Xingjiao Temple, was listed as endangered heritage in 2001 and restored. No motor vehicles inside the old town.10

When
A Friday, for the weekly market. The June to August rains make the stone paths slippery.
Time
A lunch stop between Dali and Lijiang, or a night. About two hours from Dali by car.
Booking
None.
What can go wrong
The market runs only on Fridays, so it only works if the Dali to Lijiang day falls on one.

Lijiang Old Town 丽江古城

Lijiang

The main Naxi old town, with canals, lanes and Black Dragon Pool at its north end.11 2

When
Early morning before the groups, and evening when the lanterns are lit.
Time
Half a day and an evening walk, from a base in Lijiang.
Booking
No ticket, but an old town maintenance fee of 50 CNY, valid 365 days, covers Dayan, Black Dragon Pool, Shuhe and Baisha; over-60s and children under 12 are exempt.
What can go wrong
Holiday crowding: a crowd warning was issued on 2 October 2026.

Shuhe 束河古镇

Lijiang

A smaller old town inside the Lijiang World Heritage site, with a Tea Horse Road Museum. Quieter than Dayan, and where many travelers choose to sleep.11

Time
An afternoon, or your base in Lijiang.
Booking
Covered by the Lijiang maintenance fee.
What can go wrong
A clean-up of the town has been under way through 2026, so some courtyards are in repair.

Baisha 白沙古镇

Lijiang, below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

A village-sized old town at the foot of the snow mountain, home to the mountain's visitor centre.12

Time
Two hours, often on the Jade Dragon day.
Booking
Covered by the Lijiang maintenance fee.
What can go wrong
Since July 2026 the core street is closed to all vehicles from 09:00 to 21:00, so luggage reaches a guesthouse here only before 09:00 or after 21:00.

Weishan 巍山古城

Weishan County, south of Dali

A quiet county town that People's Daily calls the cradle of the Nanzhao kingdom: a checkerboard street plan more than 600 years old, Ming and Qing buildings, and Gongchen Tower over the main street. Off the main route.13

Time
A day from Dali.
What can go wrong
Little is published about tickets and hours; we check before we put it in a plan.

Nuodeng 诺邓古村

Yunlong County, west of Dali

A village Xinhua calls a thousand years old, with stone-slab paths, run as an open village rather than a fenced, ticketed site. Visitors make well salt by hand and taste the local ham.14

Time
A long day or a night from Dali; it is well off the route.
What can go wrong
About 30,000 visitors came over summer 2026, so it is no longer unknown.

Tibetan culture: Shangri-La and Deqin

The Tibetan part of Yunnan starts on the plateau at Shangri-La and continues down the Lancang River valley near Deqin. For travelers interested in religion and village life who accept altitude and long drives.

Songzanlin Monastery 噶丹·松赞林寺

Shangri-La

A large hillside Tibetan Buddhist monastery outside the town, reached by a sightseeing bus from the visitor centre and then more than 100 steep steps.15

When
Morning, on an early slot. The Gedong festival late in the 11th lunar month brings masked dances and crowds.
Time
Half a day from Shangri-La.
Booking
Reserve a day or more ahead in peak season; summer and National Day have entry limits.
What can go wrong
The steps are hard on a first day above 3,000 m and slippery in rain, which is why the plan puts the monastery on your second morning, not your first.

Dukezong Old Town and the giant prayer wheel 独克宗古城

Shangri-La

The Tibetan old town of Shangri-La. On the hill inside it stands a prayer wheel the city describes as 21 m tall and 60 tonnes; it takes several people to turn.16

When
Late afternoon into evening. A gentle first walk at altitude.
Time
Two to three hours.
Booking
The streets are free.
What can go wrong
The hill steps are the only effort; take them slowly on day one at 3,300 m.

Cizhong Catholic Church 茨中教堂

Cizhong village, Deqin County

A church in a village on the Lancang River, built by French missionaries more than 150 years ago. The church vineyard is the source of the rose honey grape, which villagers have made into wine since 1997; Tibetan, Lisu, Naxi and Han families share the village.17

Time
About five hours by road from Shangri-La; it belongs with the Deqin days.
What can go wrong
Hours and road conditions are confirmed before travel.

Lakes and lakeside villages

From a city park to a highland lake on the Sichuan border. For travelers who want easy days: cycling, boats, birds in winter.

Erhai Lake and the lakeside corridor 洱海 洱海生态廊道

Dali

The lake beside Dali, ringed by a path of about 129 km for walking and cycling. The popular west-shore stretch runs about 46 km past Caicun wharf and the Panxi bend. Tourist boats link Dali Port, Xizhou and Shuanglang.18 19 20

When
Early morning or late afternoon. Mid-June to August is the peak.
Time
Half a day to a full day from Dali.
Booking
The corridor is free. Shared bicycles and e-bikes are rented on the spot; outside e-bikes are not allowed on the path.
What can go wrong
Busy: more than 17 million visits from January to July 2026. Washing anything in the lake is fined. If you run, this is your path.

Shuanglang 双廊

North-east shore of Erhai

An old fishing town across the lake from Dali, with Yuji Island joined to it by a bridge, Nanzhao Island offshore, and a Ming and Qing street of Bai houses.41

When
Winter brings red-billed gulls to the lakeside street.
Time
Half a day by road, or the boat from Dali Port.
What can go wrong
Reviewers call it commercial and the island paths steep and crowded; boats stop in bad weather.

Lugu Lake 泸沽湖

Ninglang County, on the Sichuan border

A highland lake about 200 km from Lijiang, home of the Mosuo people and their matrilineal families: lake villages, the Walking Marriage Bridge over the Grass Sea, boat rides, and the view from Gemu Goddess Mountain.21

When
March to May and September to November are most comfortable; winter is quiet, cold and misty in the mornings.
Time
Two to three days. It is not a day trip: 3.5 to 4 hours each way on mountain roads. It belongs on a trip that gives up Deqin, not one that adds to it.
Booking
Since January 2026 the scenic area sells no paper tickets: all tickets are bought online by real name and scanned at the gate.
What can go wrong
Agree boat routes and prices at the official pier. How a foreign passport buys the online ticket is something we settle in the plan.

Napa Lake and the Yila grassland 纳帕海 依拉草原

Shangri-La, 8 km from town

A seasonal lake and grassland: full in late summer and early autumn, shrinking to marsh in winter and spring, when black-necked cranes winter here.22

When
Late summer to autumn for a full lake; November to March for cranes.
Time
Two to three hours from Shangri-La.
What can go wrong
In winter and spring the lake can be mostly dry marsh; that is the season for birds, not reflections.

Pudacuo National Park 普达措国家公园

Shangri-La

A high forest and lake park. A compulsory sightseeing bus runs one way between Shudu Lake, the Militang meadow and Bitahai, and visitors get off only at set stops.22

When
The first bus for winter mist on Shudu Lake; May and June for azaleas; summer for wildflowers.
Time
Half a day to a full day.
Booking
Entrance with the bus, at the gate or online.
What can go wrong
Cold and rain; little food inside; the bus loop cannot be reversed.

Kunming's winter gulls at Haigeng Dam and Green Lake 滇池 海埂大坝 / 翠湖公园

Kunming

Red-billed gulls have wintered in Kunming every year since 1985. Haigeng Dam is the long embankment on Dian Lake where people watch and feed them; Green Lake is the free park in the city centre.23 24

When
Winter only. In 2025 they arrived in the first days of November; outside roughly November to spring there are none.
Time
One or two hours each, on a Kunming day.
Booking
Green Lake is free.

Walks and hikes

Two kinds. First, what an ordinary adult can do in a day on built paths. Second, the serious routes, where the rule and its date matter more than the trail description.

Cangshan Jade Belt Road 苍山 玉带路

Dali

A mid-slope walkway of about 18 km linking the upper stations of Cangshan's cable cars; the stretch between the Zhonghe chairlift and the Gantong cable car is about 11.5 km and fairly flat, above 2,000 m with the lake below.6

When
Morning; September to November for clear air.
Time
Half a day to a full day from Dali.
Booking
Tickets at each cable car station; the three cable cars are not interchangeable.
What can go wrong
Cable cars stop in wind, frost or fog. Stay on the path.

Blue Moon Valley and the Glacier Park boardwalk 蓝月谷 / 冰川公园栈道

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Two short walks inside the Jade Dragon area: a lakeside walk at the foot of the mountain, included in the entrance, and the boardwalk from the upper cable car station at 4,506 m to about 4,680 m.1

When
Blue Moon Valley before about 11:00 for the colour.
Time
Part of the Jade Dragon day.
What can go wrong
Altitude on the boardwalk; oxygen and blood-oxygen checks are offered at the stations. Plan B is to stay at Blue Moon Valley.

Shaxi to the Shibaoshan grottoes 石宝山 石钟寺石窟

Jianchuan County

A hill walk from Shaxi up to rock-cut grottoes at Shizhong Temple: a trailhead about 3 km from the old town, a path of 3.5 to 4 km climbing about 400 m past red sandstone cliffs, about three hours with stops. Walkers register at the gate; a shuttle continues to Baoxiang Temple.25

When
Leave Shaxi around 08:00.
Time
Half a day, so it needs a night in Shaxi.
What can go wrong
There is also a road up, 30 to 40 minutes by car, if the walk is not for you.

Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge boardwalk 上虎跳

Shangri-La side of the gorge

The developed part of the gorge: a boardwalk and stairs down to the Tiger Leaping Stone, with an optional lift back up. A separate scenic area on the Lijiang bank faces it, with its own ticket.26 27

When
Morning, outside the June to August rains, when rockfall closes it.
Time
Two to three hours on the drive between Lijiang and Shangri-La.
Booking
Ticket office at the visitor centre or online.
What can go wrong
The Shangri-La side is operating; its free shuttle stopped for the off season on 10 October 2026. The Lijiang side closed after a flash flood on 18 July 2026, and no reopening notice has been found. We check the week before you travel.

Yubeng village 雨崩村

East side of Meili Snow Mountain, Deqin

A village below the mountain inside Meili Snow Mountain National Park, used as a base for valley walks. Since 22 September 2026 visitors reach it by the park's shuttle from Xidang, 45 minutes to Lower Yubeng; private cars may not drive in.28 29

Time
At least two nights beyond Deqin.
Booking
A park ticket plus the shuttle.
The rule
Since 30 April 2026 the park bans hiking and camping in its unopened areas, and the list names the Xiaonong pasture at the Ice Lake. Which walks from the village remain open is something we confirm with the park before offering any of them. Rescue costs fall on those who enter banned areas.

Haba Snow Mountain 哈巴雪山

Above Tiger Leaping Gorge

A 5,396 m glaciated peak climbed from a base camp at about 4,100 m. This is mountaineering, not walking. Since September 2024 an operating company handles registration; above base camp one certified local guide accompanies each climber, and groups register in advance with a route, gear list and insurance.30

Time
Three days from the gorge, under the operator's rules.
The rule
The mountain was closed in May 2026 and reopened under registration in July. We arrange it only through the registered operator, and only for people with high-altitude experience.

Food and markets

Dishes and markets by base town. Market days and seasons carry a source; prices do not, because they change weekly.

Zhuanxin Market 大观篆新农贸市场

Kunming

A working city market of about 600 vendors that has become a place visitors go to eat: fresh produce, flowers, wild vegetables, Pu'er tea, Xuanwei ham, grilled rushan and flower cakes.31

Time
One to two hours.
What can go wrong
About 50,000 people a day and twice that on holidays, nearly half from outside the city.

The wild mushroom season 野生菌季 木水花市场

Kunming and across the province

Yunnan's wild mushrooms usually begin in May and run until the rains end in October, with summer the peak: matsutake, porcini, jianshouqing, ganba, chanterelles. The Mushuihua trading centre in Kunming is where the trade is seen.32 33

When
May to October; mid-July is the height of the season.
What can go wrong
Eat them in restaurants, not from your own pan: the market destroys dozens of inedible species each year, and the published advice is not to mix several wild species in one dish.

Crossing-the-bridge rice noodles 过桥米线

Mengzi, and everywhere in Yunnan

Rice noodles served with a bowl of very hot broth, simmered for hours from hen and pork bones, into which paper-thin raw pork, chicken and fish are dropped at the table. The dish comes from Mengzi in the south-east, where it has been eaten for more than 300 years.34

Xizhou baba, rushan and the Sifang Street morning market 喜洲粑粑 乳扇

Xizhou, Dali

A flatbread baked for about ten minutes in a charcoal stove on Sifang Street, savoury or sweet, on Dali's intangible heritage list since 2011. Rushan is a dried milk sheet made by curdling fresh milk with sour papaya water, eaten fried or grilled. Bai three-course tea and Dali sour-spicy fish come from the same kitchens.9

When
Early, before the tour groups.

Shaxi Friday market 沙溪 周五集市

Shaxi, Jianchuan County

The weekly market of the Shaxi valley, every Friday from the morning until late afternoon on one long street beside the old town, not on the old square itself.25

When
Fridays only; the good stalls pack up after about 16:00.

The Tibetan table in Shangri-La 牦牛肉火锅 酥油茶 糌粑

Dukezong, Shangri-La

Yak hotpot, butter tea made from tea, butter and salt, tsampa of roasted barley flour, barley wine, yogurt, and matsutake stir-fried with green peppers in its season, mid-July to early September.35

What can go wrong
A light first evening at 3,300 m, and no alcohol on day one.

Hot springs and volcanoes: Tengchong

Western Yunnan is its own journey, on our 14-day route only. For travelers who want hot springs and a slower town after the mountains. Official sources for these places are thin, so prices and hours are confirmed in the plan, not here.

Heshun 和顺古镇

Tengchong

An old town of overseas-Chinese families: a hillside library founded in the late 1920s by emigrants in Myanmar, a museum of the Yunnan–Myanmar war, ancestral halls and Qing-era laundry pavilions.36 45 46

Time
One to two days.
Booking
One ticket covers every site in the town and is valid for 7 days. It is real-name, and the scenic area names only the Chinese ID card, so how a passport buys and enters is something we settle in the plan. The scenic area says there is no free-entry period.

Tengchong Hot Sea 腾冲热海景区

Tengchong

A geothermal valley with boiling springs and steam vents, and bathing pools inside the area.36 47

Time
Three to five hours.
What can go wrong
Part of the area has been closed for construction; which part is not stated. The only official notice found closed the area after heavy rain on 14 July 2025, and no reopening notice has been found, although tickets are on sale in 2026; we check before you go.

Tengchong Volcano Park 腾冲火山地热国家地质公园

Tengchong

A group of old volcanic cones with crater walks and a geology museum. Hot-air balloon rides are sold separately and depend on the weather.36

Time
Three to five hours.
What can go wrong
Balloons are suspended in wind; we never promise them.

Rice terraces: Yuanyang

The Hani terraces of the Ailao Mountains, a World Heritage site since 2013, more than 1,300 years old. They are south of Kunming, the opposite direction from Dali and Lijiang, and add at least two nights to a trip that starts or ends in Kunming.

Duoyishu, Bada and Laohuzui 多依树 坝达 老虎嘴

Yuanyang County

The three core viewing areas: Duoyishu for sunrise, Bada for sunset, Laohuzui as a second sunset viewpoint with a smaller area since a landslide. The terraces are flooded and mirror-like from about November to April, with December to February the peak; spring ploughing and transplanting run from late April through May.37 38 39

When
Late November to early April for water. Morning fog can hide the sunrise completely.
Time
Two nights in a village on the rim; about 4.5 to 5 hours by car from Kunming, or a bullet train to Mengzi and a mountain transfer.
Booking
One ticket covers the main viewpoints and is sold at the gates.
What can go wrong
A foggy morning has a Plan B: the Hani village of Azheke inside the heritage area, which has its own small ticket.

Not offered right now

Places a plan from us will not include until the rule changes, with the notice that decides it.

  • Tiger Leaping Gorge High Trail and Middle Gorge 虎跳峡高路徒步线 中虎跳: On 1 May 2026 the Shangri-La side scenic area banned entry to the undeveloped Middle and Lower gorge and the whole High Trail after two deaths in February. No notice withdrawing the ban has been found as of 10 October 2026. The developed Upper gorge boardwalk is unaffected.40
  • Yak Meadow cable car, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain 牦牛坪索道: Closed since March 2026 for rebuilding, with reopening expected around 2028. The Glacier Park and Spruce Meadow cable cars run.1
